Slovenia, the green treasure of Europe. A colourful land with a preserved natural environment lying in the centre of Europe at the junction of three geological regions: the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the Pannonian Plain. When you see it, you will surely be surprised by of its special attractions.
You will remember Slovenia not only for its spectacular Postojna Cave, picturesque Lake Bled, the beautiful white horses of Lipica, the lush vineyards, and the very special experience of its primeval forests and other interesting natural hospitality and friendliness of its people.
Slovenian group:
Gimnazija Vič is a secondary school run by Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. Contact persons are Jana Šivec (teacher of geography and sociology) and Marija Boh (teacher of geography). The school has altogether around 801 students (age 15-19), with 50 teachers, of which 2 teachers are involved. One of the teachers applied unsuccessfully for funds to take part in the Comenius course for teachers in Lisbon (October 2001). The school has been involved in many "external" activities. On international level they are involved in Comenius 1(Titania) and Comunius 3 (The treasure within) projects. Jana Šivec cooperate in international project called Portfolio and Marija Boh conducts the school’s geographical contest.
Another school is Osnovna šola Oskarja Kovačiča, a primary school also run by the Ministry. The school is fairly large with 873 students (7-15), and 60 teachers with two involved in the network. Contact persona are Barbara Klembas (teacher of history) and Milena Murovec (teacher of English and Slovenian language). The school has been involved in many "external" activities. Internationally they are involved in two Comenius projects. Barbara Klembas conducts school’s historical circle and she is the mentor of pupils community and Milena Murovec conducts the school’s literature activity called Cankarjeva bralna značka (pupils awards/circle for knowledge of literature).
A third school is Osnovna šola Danile Kumar. Contact persons are Mira Zupan Shaar (teacher of geography and history) and Urša Marn (social pedagogue/school pedagogue) who took part in the Lisbon Comenius 2-course. As the others school is also run by the Ministry. There are 675 pupils + 101 foreign pupils. The school has one international department with lectures (only) in English. There are 81 teachers with 2 involved in the network activities. The school has been involved in many "external" activities. The international department is active in International Baccalaureate Organisation and in European Council of International Schools. The school started bilateral project with the elementary school in Busua (Ghana) (includes development of contact between children (writing letters, etc), humanitarian activities etc). One of the main “actors” in this project is Urša Marn. Mira Zupan Shaar conducts the school’s geographical circle.
The teacher training element in the Slovenian group is University of Ljubjana, Faculty of Education (PEF) with 3 persons taking part: Mojca Peček-Čuk (Ph. D. of pedagogic, assistant professor at PEF), Nada Turnšek (M. A. of sociology, senior assistant at PEF) and Darij Zadnikar (Ph. D. of philosophy, assistant professor at PEF). There are 2910 students and 160 "pedagogical workers" (lecturers and assistants). One of them unsuccessfully applied for funding to go to the Lisbon course in October 2001. PEF has been involved in Leonardo da Vinci, Tempus, Eden, Comenius, Sokrates-Erasmus and many others programs.
The coordinating institution in Slovenia is Inštitut za slovensko izseljenstvo ZRC SAZU (Institute for Slovenian Emigration Studies ZRC SAZU). Marina Lukšič-Hacin (Ph. D. of sociology, research associate, lecturer at the University in Ljubljana, from 1999 head of the Institute) and Jernej Mlekuž (M.A. of geography, senior assistant at the Institute) are involved out of a staff of 9 researchers. The Institute is holder of 5 Slovenian financed projects and cooperates in two international projects.
