UiS was was given university status in January 2005 as the fifth and most recent university in Norway. In 1994 several independent institutions joined together as Stavanger University College.
UIS has approx. 7.500 students and 700 staff, in nursing, humanities, arts, education, hotel management and business, science and engineering, and offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Of the its staff, around 40 are working in ODL.

Stavanger has considerable experience in the migration studies area. Components in this area are part of its existing Master’s level work, including a collaboration with the University of Oslo. Stavanger has hosted numerous colloquia and conferences on this subject. One of the most recent ones (2000) demonstrated links with local museums, and the local and regional councils, who sponsored it.

Stavanger is also experienced in EC-funded work, having participated in several programmes: Comenius 2 In-service training courses for teachers (migration/intercultural relations); Comenius 3 Theamtic Network in progress (migration/intercultural relations); Comparative Studies on Migration to Canada (Croatia, Portugal, Norway), 2001-2003; Socrates ODL-project (now: Minerva): ODL-Migration: Affirming Diversity Through Migration (1998-2000); · Regional project: Migration History in Rogaland, Norway (1998-2002); Project coordinator - College project: Digitizing Historical Migration history
