The evolution of the present Faculty of Education of University of Ljubljana began with the founding of the College of Education on 4 July 1947, the activities of which were intended to train teachers for the primary and secondary schools of the day. With the reform of primary school education and the transformation of teachers' colleges, the need to adapt the education of teachers to a new situation arose. As a result, in 1964 the Ljubljana Academy of Education was established on the foundations laid by the former College of Education. The new Academy of Education provided two-year study programmes (associated degree) for all future primary school teachers, special educators and librarians.

In 1972, the Academy of Education became a member of the University of Ljubljana. Over more than twenty years of operation, the Academy gradually expanded its programmes of study to the point that in the mid-80s, some of these were transferred to the Faculty of Arts (languages, history, geography, librarianship) and to the Academy of Music (music education), while those in the sciences have since been taught in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Biotechnology. With the adoption of the new law on the Academy of Education, four-year university-level studies commenced for the remaining programmes in 1987-88.

In May 1991, when the first class of students graduated from the four-year university programme, the Academy of Education was renamed the Faculty of Education.

From the beginning of its activity to its elimination, the two-year study programmes produced 11,102 graduates, representing 8,154 full-time and 2,958 part-time students from either the College of Education or the Academy of Education.

The transformation of the former College of Education, by way of the Academy of Education, into a Faculty of Education came as a consequence of development of national education as well as social circumstances, in which the education of teachers gradually assumed an ever-greater importance, with the result that teacher-training programmes were increasingly expanded and improved. One of the factors conditioning this change was a shift in the conception of the teaching profession from one picturing the teacher with minimal authority, to one viewing the educator as autonomous and as a professional. Similar process can also be noted in other countries, where the education of primary school teachers has been gradually broadened and incorporated into universities. The reasons for the inclusion of such programmes into universities include the desire to overcome the traditional insularity of institutions educating teachers; to extend to primary school teachers a more thorough knowledge of individual fields and the possibility of an academic education, as had always been the case for secondary school teachers; to develop international collaboration in the education of teachers, which in the past was isolated within national boundaries; to improve the professional reputation of primary school teachers; to increase the flexibility of employment opportunities for teachers; and to train teachers for an augmented role that is in no way limited to the transfer of knowledge to students in a set subject.
