Mirjam M. Hladnik
Mirjam M. Hladnik works as a research fellow at the Institute for Slovenian Emigration Studies at the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and as an assistant professor at the University of Ljubljana.
Her main research interest and publications were for many years in the field of sociology of education. Her main work on the history of school reforms and equity in education is the book "The school reform is a paper tiger" (1986), a documented history of the civil opposition against the notorious Slovenian educational reform in the eighties. The second book, "Schools and teachers in Slovenia" (1995) is a historical analysis of the establishment of the national educational systems, the reasons for the feminisation of the teaching profession and its impact on the role of education in the modern society. In the field of women studies, she concentrated on the women teachers and the historical negligence of other educated and socially important women. She is an editor of the collected works of Angela Vode in three volumes (1998, 1999, 2000) and the author of the biographical introductions. She published numerous articles in Slovenia and abroad.
For the last four years, she has been living in New York City and working on the field of migration studies. She devoted her time mainly to a research project »The Role of Women in Preserving Cultural Heritage among Slovenian Migrants in the United States«. As the project is an oral history study (the first of its kind), she has recorded sixty five life narratives of women of different age, generation, status and profession. On the basis of her research project, a documentary has been filmed in October 2003 and the material for the Arhives of the Institute for the Emigration Studies in Ljubljana has been collected.
