Research Project: Analysing Text Books ( Theme of MIGRATION in History, Civics, Citizenship)
How MIGRATION and INTERCULTURALITY is treated in school bookds: text, images, pedagocial innovation etc. Developing of categories for research on textbooks; discussion of methodology; analysis of content.
A research project suggested both by Dirk Lange (Oldenburg) and Jernej Mlekuz (Ljubljana).
Administrator: Dirk Lange
(1) Dirk Lange, Carl von Ossietzky University:
"Concerning the analysing of text-books we are looking at how politics- and history text-books deal with contents on migration.
For this analysis we developed a system of categories that makes it possible to distinguish between reasons for migration in the "departure countries" and consequences in the host countries.
We analyse each passage that deals with migration and are looking for the reasons for and the consequences of migration that are mentioned. Two of our hypothesis are
- that migrants are shown as victims more than active acting people and
- that text books emphatize the problems and negatives aspects of migration but neglect the positives aspects."
(2) Jernej Mlekuz, Institute for Slovenian Emigration Studies:
"The group will explore the presence of migration contents in primary and secondary school textbooks for the following subjects: geography, history, sociology, the history of arts, and literature. When the analysis of the textbooks is finished, suggestions for changes in future editions and new textbooks will be collected and discussed with the teachers. Final formulation of proposals would be send to the state council of education.
Finally they would compare the presence of migration contents in school programs of the countries which would joint this project. The comparison would be made within individual subjects and between individual countries' school programs as such."
