It has been widely accepted, whether among specialists in the field of immigration or among the Portuguese public (but particularly among Azoreans) in general, that those Portuguese who emigrated from the mainland did so with the clear intention of one day returning to their homeland, while the Azoreans, on the other hand, abandoned their homeland forever...

By studying emigration in a particular Azorean village, and establishing contacts with many other Azoreans living in Toronto, the author of this work was surprised to discover that virtually all of the several hundred Azorean emigrants he contacted throughout the duration of this study had left the Azores with the explicit intention of returning just as soon as they were able to established those conditions which would allow them to return without having to work for someone else. In fact, many of these emigrants had made concrete plans to return after having spent 10/12 years in the host country.
