The Portuguese migratory movement is by no means a recent phenomenon. In fact, its roots can be dated as far back as the early fifteenth century and the Era of Discoveries when Portuguese mariners sailed uncharted waters in search of El Dourado - the ocean route to the Orient and all its riches. Although many Portuguese returned from these voyages, still others settled abroad. . These individuals - sailors, adventurers, fishermen, evangelists, soldiers, or simple colonists - constitute the first contingent of Portuguese emigrants. Included among this group are a significant number of slaves who, although forced to leave their homes, also constitutes a noteworthy proportion of the Portuguese migrants during this era. |
