Title: The Social Meaning of Being Portuguese Canadian
Author: Ronald Louis Fernandez
Source: The Social Meaning of Being Portuguese Canadian, Occasional Papers in Ethnic and Immigration Studies, The Multicultural History Society of Ontario, Toronto, 1979.
In this short book the author, Ronald Fernandez, discusses the multiple causes that lead Portuguese immigrants in Canada to assert different ethnic identities at different times and likewise describes the conceptual environment associated with being Portuguese in Montreal. The author notes that on some occasions one’s Portuguese background is stressed over their “Canadianness” while at other times this same identity is strongly rejected. What then, asks the author, determines one’s choice of ethnicity at any given moment. Is this choice a random one or rather is it based on specific criteria?
The author argues that the choice of identity among the Portuguese community is directly related to status: under certain circumstances being Portuguese is associated with high status while under different circumstances Portuguese ethnicity is in line with being a foreigner and an outcast.
